During my last few months of high school, I began to get the feeling that I wanted to do something to sum up the time I had spent there, and how I had changed over that time.

Over the four years of my life spent there, I became heavily involved in the performing arts, and particularly in choir. Anne Whattoff, the director, who has always been the biggest supporter of my music, suggested to the administration that I compose a piece to be performed at the graduation ceremony. After some collaboration, we decided to use the Robert Frost poem "The Road Not Taken".

This was the first vocal piece I had ever written in English. Poetry can be open to so many different interpretations, and I really noticed a lot of conflicting themes in this text. It deals mostly with the choice of taking the "path less traveled by". While at face value Frost speaks of it as a good choice, it deals with undertones of regret and what could have been.

Because of this, my musical translation of the poem has a more bittersweet sound to it. I would say that it is one of the most Elfman-esque compositions I've created.

Personally this piece is among my favorites, but it was received with mixed reaction. While some people really liked it, others felt it was too depressing. The recording was made at St. Paul's Cathedral but there was an error with the equipment and the quality ended up lower than I had hoped.
