Following the success of the Ave Maria as a part of the Compline mass, Anne Whattoff asked me to once again write sacred work to be performed during the service.
With Te Lucis Ante Terminum, I decided for more of an East Asian sound. The soprano line is written entirely using a pentatonic scale, which is often attributed the music of ancient China and Japan. Since I didn't want such a limited choice of chord structure, the alto and tenor lines did not follow this same rule.
This piece isn't much like my other choral work, but it's become one of my favorites. It is frequently performed during Compline; this recording from the evening of August 31, 2008.
