After writing Ave Regina Caelorum, I found it difficult not to compose the other three Marian antiphons. Ultimately, obsessive compulsive disorder got the best of me.

Generally I don't work with the full spectrum of modal scales, at least not intentionally, but Salve Regina was one of the first times I've made a truly conscious effort to do so. I find Lydian intriguing because the raised fourth gives the music such a...bittersweet feel to it.

It became especially apparent when I first heard it live, but the piece is very sinuous, which is an quality I'm beginning to grow very fond of in my choral compositions. This was recording made during Compline on August 31, 2008 at St. Paul's Cathedral.
