Translated as "Flight of the Madrigals", this was the first choral work I ever composed, originally written for and performed by the West Hills High School Chamber Ensemble, directed by Anne Whattoff. At the time, I was a sophomore.
Due to my inexperience in the vocal music genre at the time, I may have made some odd voice leading choices, and ended up taking a Swingle Singers approach to the lyrics. To put it simply, there aren't any words. All of the notes are sung with the syllables "Da", "Ba", or "Dn", giving it that kind of scat-like sound. Melodically I like the piece, but I'm still unsure whether I'm satisfied with the final product. It may have worked better as a baroque-style instrumental.
In any case, seeing it performed live was incredibly exciting, particularly considering that prior to this piece very few people had heard any of my music. However, since it was written so long ago, and I've never revisited the piece, I never had the opportunity to get a audio recording of it. |
