After writing Sicut Cervus, I hadn't composed any choral music for almost two years. It wasn't until Anne Whattoff, whose constant support over the years has helped make me the musician I am today, asked me to write her a sacred work that I was able to regain the desire to create vocal music again.
I took a different approach to this composition in that rather than develop a melody and match words to it, I wrote phrase by phrase individually, resulting in a more text driven piece. It was unconventional for me but I'm quite pleased with the result.
Ave Maria has been performed a number of times at St. Paul's Cathedral, as a part of Compline, an ancient candlelit evening service, of which Anne is both director and soprano vocalist. This recording is from said service on August 31, 2008.
